What’s Love Got To Do With It

Over this past summer, I met up with friends that I had not seen in a few years. I got the chance to talk to one of them who seem to have a new outlook on life. Firstly, you may not know this, but formerly…years ago, I was a youth minister. These friends were from the youth group who became like family to me. This individual was not into the Bible, church thing and went his own way. Now, I am not saying this was wrong of him in any way. I, truly, believe we all have to find our own “normal” and what is right for one may not be for another. I am a counselor…we are trained to be neutral, if you did not know. Anyhow, where was I….OH!…right….so I’m talking with this young man (I’m old) and I asked him how he has been. What he said was awesome for me to hear. He said that he realized that life is more than just money and women. It is about being kind and respectful to everyone. The feeling of showing love to people far out weighs any pleasure or feeling “things” gives us. Now, I am paraphrasing because I am old and my memory is crap, but it reminded me of what my goal as counselor is. My goal is to share the love of God to everyone who walks into my office. Now, you can insert whom or whatever higher power you want in that sentence. Again, I am not here to say my belief is the only belief. What is right for me may not be for you and that is okay. I am not trying to push anything on you.

I, simply, write this to let you know that no matter what race, creed, color, gender, sexual orientation, and anything else that would like to divide and separate us humans…NO MATTER…you are loved….you are special….you are important to this messed up experience we call life. There is a reason you are here, right now. We may not know what that reason is or maybe we do, but if for nothing else, it is to show love to others. It is to unite and not divide. It is to bring closer and not push away. It is to be kind and respectful knowing this life is a gift. It may not seem that way sometimes…most times…all of the time, but it is.

I find it interesting that humans tend to treat strangers with more respect than we treat those who are closest to us. Show them how much they mean to you. Make an effort to mend relationships. Being together is so important for both your physical and mental health. There have been plenty of studies that I am not going to list here, but go look it up.

As always, I would love to hear your thoughts.
